big van to Littlehampton-down little laneways among Cathedrals of Trees
we village after village-thin snail trail roads made for oxen of another century
Fast cars splashed past-Sunday cyclists, motorbikers gathering in pubs
Sunday lunch families on picnics-down to climping beach
where the barrier had to be raised for the van's high yellow lights
We sat on the stones and rocks of tides past and still to come
built imaginary rock empires-half Twin Towers, half Tower of Babel conversations
Little rock universes, seashell stars, solar system shells climped together
We paid for the time and rode in to the green trees,
through forests and woods adjacent to streams
where children fed mallards and we made jokes
about real estate and fences against woods
Icecreams later,on a National Trust view
we drove round Sussex and Surrey anew
to see Chapels of Trees we had never seen before
This may be a little world ,with little fields and little roads
yet the spaces between the cages make for wonders of ages
suns shines within you-enjoy the view!
