"Tales of Ordinary Madness"
"Barfly""Factotem"-all fictional films based upon his books
All as different as the fantasies of directors and actors
All failed box office appeal-yet each has a poetry
more than the quoted lines that spout between linked stories
of a man long gone, whose work still resonates
even though his era of drunkenness ,racetracks, failed behavior
has been superseded by an age of fear ,war and virtual "reality"
We conjecture his lifestyle via his own Gallic Wars
even when we may have objected to him in the flesh
He still speaks-like Dylan,Cohen,Rimbaud,Baudelaire,Villon
to a new crop of cultural evolutionaries-artists,poets,singers
who take inspiration from the scripted stories and enchantments
being the basis for visual enhancement posthumously
Bless Bukowski! Puritans still curse his swearing
Parents still warn their young against emulating
Lovers still long for an age of simple sex with no fear of death
Nostalgia is not enough-either his voice still speaks
raw and steak and swear and hot-or not
Only his words survive. The rest is lies.
