Before we were here(and afterwards
there will be living consciousness
Vibrancy of birds,bees,beasts
within a context of earth,plants,shrubs,trees
Pre-lawn,pre-golf course-a wild willing wood
that grew quite naturally,and died in drought
or flame of fire,or quite naturally expired in time
We came and saw only resource-wood for fences
houses,homes and furniture.We chopped,cleared,bulldozed,mulched
and made less of what was once more.We lack respect for living things-
for what we call weeds .We blame Cedar Fever on the Junipers.
We make industries of logging,supplant multi-species
with single growth pine newspaper plantations(where no bird sings
Our elders may outlast us-or we may use them to death/
making them agents of our power/saddling them with our debt.
Air is not free.Trees work hard to photosynthesize carbon dioxide.
Water is not free.Every nursery knows-trees are not free.
We need to pay rent of respect and reverence to our elders...
