Growing up with Ken Russell(who loved J M Barrie so much
because he just would never grow up.We love him for TOMMY
or WOMEN IN LOVE-but his failures distinguished him more than others.
He comprehended Muses-Greig,Delius,Mahler,Liszt,Elgar-and hated Strauss!
He loved D H Lawrence-filming Lady Chatterley's Lover and The Rainbow
Musically,filmically adept and able to adapt literature boldly
(from THE DEVILS to BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN)
he made films of passion like CRIME OF PASSION and ALTERED STATES
I enjoyed the censored jump cuts as much as the R certificate bravery
and often wish we could see his full versions of visions re-issued
Right to the end,he was making movies(for the Internet)
as independent a film maker as any student at first base.
He lived life like Zorba-and shared his adolescent fantasies
for all of us growing in to relationships.His actors were Oscar worthy,
his own acting more than passable,and his creations quite unique
Once the 60's and 70s were eclipsed,we lost him.
Only his body departed this week.His spirit left us long ago..
