i have been watching our police force-
as they guide traffic and monitor motorists
sit at road construction sites and chat amongst themselves
this is what POETS do! They can drive (most are taxi drivers)
as well as text and write ,and give cautions to aberrant drivers
and when it comes to negotiation-poets are a plus!
They are the PEACE CORPS of 2010-a viable alternative to force
If you need stronger words,we have SLAM poets-rappers&hiphop
They do not need guns,tasers,batons,pepper spray
A good reading of a very bad poem will drive anyone into submission!
I have noticed how much of our budget goes into FEAR-
security,police,public health,fire brigade,ambulance-
but mostly to police.None for poets!Nothing for poetry-
even when it is a periennal public impulse that drives everyone
into reading,reciting,memorizing at some time in their lives
This is what saves lives-wisdom(shared,remembered-
and this is where your poets come in.Pay them! Be them!
In fact,at the very core-you already are....
