Bells ring around him as he shadows
His bearded smile hugs you first-GOOD NEWS!
He drags a bag of antique books of my poetry
out from some hidden sanctuary of Ruta Maya
Shows me colors and titles I had forgotten existed!
"I have ANOTHER bag,too,Thom!-
and it has MORE in it!"
These are the books I had given him
over many poetry evenings of open mike
and Poetry Karaoke on that famed front porch
where EXPOSE complained about the noise
and APD dropped in when we were far too happy
Now condominiums crowd in across the parked in street
Happy Jack has just returned from Kerrville
his other home in this chameleon city is with us-poets!
He used to sit and listen deeply as we improvised
He clapped and applauded wildly at our mildness
and now he still sparks joy everywhere he bells
He holds these stories close-the ones he tells
are all good news.He has TWO bags of poetry-priceless!
And none of us can afford his true worth!
